EU chief says Britain could join the zone
Detroit News.Net Sunday 30th November, 2008
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has revealed that Britain could join the eurozone as a direct consequence of global financial turmoil.
Barroso told a French TV station: 'We are now closer than ever before. This crisis has emphasised the importance of the euro, and also of Britain.'
He said: “Some British politicians have already told me, if we had the euro, we would have been better off.”
Barroso also mentioned Denmark, another EU state which has also refused to accept the euro but is now planning another referendum on the single currency.
The Danish voted against joining in 2000.
